Sibu Super Series (Volley Ball)

I must say that I had to think twice before I write this article as I know some of the reader might not feel comfortable reading this…but, this is one post that too good to be left unshared. Hahahaha. Yeah, it started as casual outing watching volley ball tournament but end up as one of the most memorable event this year. So, what is it about Sibu Super Series? Well, it gathers the best team around Sarawak to participate in Super Series held at Rejang Park. Me and my friend (Mr. Alex) come straight from MSSM under 13 to watch the tournament. He told me about a group of Iron Lady (yes! You read it right! I watched Iron Lady movie years ago) from Thailand participating in Sibu Super Series…so we made up our mind, and came straight to the venue. To our horror, there were no parking outside the venue and from my car I could see the venue was jammed pack with the crowd. Gah…luckily we manage to make a short detour around the housing area and manage to find an empty car park just behind the venue.

We arrived at 7.20 pm and waited for nearly two hours before the next match involving the Iron Lady Team and ATM (Angkatan Tentera Malaysia). Finally, they arrived in their red jersey with Chiang Rai VC (Chiang Rai Volley Ball Club) written at their back. We could see them wearing makeup before they warming up! Hehehe..such a funny sight. Deep in my mind I can guarantee the ATM team would leave no mercy on them and they would walk out badly beaten.

As the match goes, Chiang Rai VC maintains their composure, showing their skillful moves and delighting the crowd with their creative serves!! They were really good, no kidding! Eventually, they beat ATM team three sets straight!! (the ATM team didn’t even manage to reach 20 points in all three sets!!). Gosh! How can someone with soft attitude, fragile and (ahem) flowery man beating a masculine, thick moustache and manly man with ease??? Hahahaha.  Anyway, I basically chose Natasha (his name wasn’t Natasha but me and my friend named him that way for some reason, ghehehe)…and yes, I took some pictures of them with my cheap headphone camera.

We heard that they went straight to the final on Sunday as they never lose. Again, we decided to watch the final match with another friend, Mr. Molin. I showed him their videos which I captured the other night and that was enough to persuade him to tag along..Hahaha. This time around, I have prepared my own camera. We arrived in time and manage to find the best spot to stand, close enough to feel the exciting atmosphere.

In the final, Chiang Rai VC met Sibu team (sponsored by prudential, cough!). Initially I thought the Sibu team was stronger than ATM, but unexpectedly Chiang Rai VC triumph the final match with a clean three sets win!! As the winner, they went home with RM 3000 prize. Their libero player was also chosen as the best player.

This is killin’ me

I got new laptop, but it comes with a price…no cd player so I can’t install Adobe Phothoshop. Without my all time favourite software, I’m stuck! I can’t breath. I can’t work. My life seems motionless. I’m bored to death! Ahhhhhh! So here I am, while waiting for some installations in progress, you’ll notice no ‘y2jdicaprio.blogspot.com’ stamped in my photos…ugh…By the way, as my life goes on (and so do my blogging activities), let me crack some myths from the internet(I get it from internet after all)…

Move away meow, proffessor is in the house…

1.       Myth: Muscles Turn Into Fat When We Quit Exercising
This is impossible simply because muscle and fat are composed of totally different cells. While exercising you do not produce more cells (hyperplasia) but only increase the volume of the existing ones (hypertrophy). When you quit exercising your muscle sells just relax. Muscle mass maintaining requires very small amount of energy, 13 calories per kilogram daily. The persons who exercise have more needs for food so they can maintain and increase their muscles. When they suddenly quit doing exercises their need for food decrease and their muscles stop increasing as well. In other words, it is true that the food they eat after they quit exercising turns into fat because they are not active anymore, but it is not true that the same thing happens with their muscle cells. It will be more like… a magic.

2.       Myth: Red Liquid in Raw Meat is Blood

The truth is that there is almost no blood in the meat we buy, except in the steak and similar meat, but those are very small amounts of blood in them. When you buy chicken or so-called “white meat,” you can never see any blood because it has already been removed during slaughter. Red meat, especially beef, contain quite a bit of water. In combination with a protein called myoglobin, this water ends up comprising most of that red liquid.

3.       Myth: Ostriches Bury Their Heads in Sand

Contrary to popular belief, not one ostrich bury their heads in the sand. You’ve probably heard that ostriches do such a thing when they are in danger. Well, let’s think logically! With their acute eyesight and hearing, ostriches can sense predators from far away. Since the ostriches can run at over 70 kilometers per hour (43 mph) for up to 30 minutes, it will be very foolish of them to just bury they heads in the sand in order to protect theirself. However, when threatened the ostrich will lay its head to the ground, so that its body will resemble a bush to passing predators. To an observer it may look like the ostriches bury their heads in the sand, but they actually never do that.

4.       Myth: Shaving Increases Hair Growth

Researches that have been led since 1920 show that shaving neither increases hair growth nor causes the hair to become thicker or darker. Skin organs that produce hair are follicles and they are located beneath the surface of the skin, which means that there is no possibility you can touch them with your razor. To make it even clearer, let’s think logically again. For example, if shaving really increase the hair growth then why it is not used as a cure for male patterned baldness. All what the men suffering from baldness would have to do is to shave their heads periodically. It just doesn’t happen. If you still are asking yourself “Than why my hairs are thicker and darker than few years ago,” the answer is simple… the aging process.

5.       Myth: Sushi is Raw Fish

Wrong! Sashimi is thinly sliced raw seafood that is usually served in restaurants along with sushi, but sushi itself is not raw fish! Sushi is vinegared rice that is most often, but not always, paired with raw seafood. For example, the Seattle roll sushi typically consists cucumber, avocado, and raw or smoked salmon.

6.       Myth: The Sun is Yellow

Yes, it is surprising! Even though it appears yellow in the sky, the color of the sun is actually white. For you computer geeks out there, the exact color of the sun is #fff5f2. The reason the Sun appears yellow on Earth is that our atmosphere scatters light from the Sun – so the apparent color of the sun changes. This same scattering effect is why the sky looks blue during the day instead of black, like during the night.

7.       Myth: We Use Only 10% of Our Brain

This myth has been misattributed to many people, including Albert Einstein. However, there is no scientific data which support this statement. The truth is that every part of the brain has its function. Our brain is active even when we sleep, it is just in a different active state. If 90% of brain is “inactive” or “unused,” then how it is possible that damage to these areas impair performance? There is almost no part of the brain that can be damaged without loss of abilities.

8.       Myth: Tongue Has Different Taste Zones

This myth has begun when Edwin G. Boring, a Harvard psychologist, mistranslated a German paper written by German scientist D.P. Hanig, in 1901. The truth is there isn’t any ‘tongue map.’ Everybody can sense (more or less) every taste everywhere on the tongue where there are taste bud, with slight variations that are random from person to person.

IRT: Lisa Kelly

Few weeks ago I watched IRT: Deadliest Roads in History Channel. I wasn’t keen on watching the first episode as I never follow the previous seasons (seriously, what’s fun watching ice road trucker along an icy road??). This season marked the debut or the History Channel's IRT: Deadliest Roads where some of the ice road truckers from Alaska and Canada travel all the way to Delhi, India to haul cement and construction supplies to a hydroelectric project in the Himalayas. To get there, they have to traverse the clogged, chaotic streets of Delhi before heading to a narrow mountain road hewn out of the mountainsides with little or no protection from a sheer 1,000 foot drop in many places.

The company assigned spotters to each of the drivers (Alex Debagorski, Rick Yemm and Lisa Kelly) not because they're foreigners (although being unfamiliar with the road rules could play a role) but apparently that's a requirement in India to help the driver negotiate congested areas or parts of the roadway with tight clearance. It was a solid first episode but what kept me on the show is none other than the female driver, Lisa Kelly(ahem!).

Lisa's got the tough job to prove that she, a woman, has what it takes to captain her truck in a country where women aren't normally seen behind the wheel of any vehicle.  Don't let her pretty exterior fool you, though, she's a tough tomboy through and through, with the tenacity and guile to champion any road in the world.  Lisa's spotter is Toshi, the most bilingual out of the group, and Lisa makes it her mission to learn as much as she can from him.  Pretty soon she's interacting in Hindi, and making her voice heard on the road.

Allow me to introduce to you, Lisa Kelly…

Here’s an article from The Star today:
It was a Jais intrusion, says church
PETALING JAYA: The Damansara Utama Methodist Church (DUMC) maintained that the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) had trespassed on its premises last week.
DUMC senior pastor Dr Daniel Ho reiterated that Jais and police officers had entered its Dream Centre without a search warrant.
“They intruded into the thanksgiving dinner, interrupted the programme (and) took photographs and videos when they came in.
“The Jais and police officers did exit the hall but remained in the corridor, still taking videos.
“Jais officers (also) issued several warnings to the organisers for refusing to cooperate,” Dr Ho said yesterday, rebutting a statement from Jais director Marzuki Hussin on Thursday.
Marzuki had said they had not raided the church but had entered after obtaining permission from the organisers.
He said Jais was merely conducting a “check” to look for Muslims at the Aug 3 event at 9.45pm, which is provided for under the Syariah Criminal Enactment (Selangor) 1995.
Marzuki maintained that the enforcement officers did not act aggressively or trespassed that night.
Damansara Utama Methodist Church

My question is, are they allowed to conduct this kind of RAID or “check” (as stated by JAIS) in other religious event? How much power do they have to simply walk in on worship premises and conduct the unwarranted raid? If so, can our priests conduct similar raid in any mosque around Malaysia? This is humiliating and it gives great concern to all non Muslim in Malaysia.
The strongest condemnation came from the Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism,, an interfaith group that said in a prepared release that it “unreservedly condemns the unwarranted raid... which clearly breached the constitutionally guaranteed, and internationally recognized, sanctity of a holy place of worship – an event which has been confirmed by the Malaysian AIDS Council to have been organized to raise funds.” The religious police’s action, the council said, “sets a dangerous precedent which must be stopped and condemned by all peace-loving Malaysians. The constitutionally guaranteed and internationally recognized sanctity of all places of worship cannot be compromised, and this unprecedented violation must be investigated and those responsible, appropriately punished.”
The statement also questioned whether any people had been asked to convert, as the newspapers reported, and demanded that: “If the newspapers in question are found to have published false statements likely, or meant, to incite religious or racial hatred between Malaysians, the authorities must initiate the necessary action to punish them to the full extent provided for in our laws.”
